What liver tests look at
The liver is a busy organ that helps process nutrients, filter the blood, build proteins, and clear waste. Because so much of that work leaves a chemical trace, a blood sample can carry information about several aspects of liver activity at once. This is why a common starting point is a bundled panel rather than a single marker.
Broadly, liver tests fall into a few groups. Enzymes such as ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase, and GGT are substances found in liver and related tissues that can rise in the blood when cells are stressed or irritated. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment left over as the body recycles old red blood cells, and the liver normally helps clear it.
