What Is Rheumatoid Factor (RF)?

Rheumatoid factor, or RF, is an antibody that the immune system can produce that reacts to other antibodies in the blood. It is associated with rheumatoid arthritis and with several other conditions, but it is not specific on its own β€” it can be present without a diagnosis and absent when a condition is present. A clinician reads RF as one piece of a larger picture rather than as an answer by itself.

What rheumatoid factor is

Antibodies normally recognize outside targets, but rheumatoid factor is unusual in that it is an antibody directed at a part of the body's own antibodies. When the immune system makes rheumatoid factor, it can be measured in the blood. The test looks for the presence and amount of this antibody as a way of gathering information.

The name comes from its long association with rheumatoid arthritis, the condition in which it was first studied. But rheumatoid factor is not unique to that condition. It is also possible for rheumatoid factor to be absent in someone who does have a condition it is associated with.
