What Is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is an amino acid that the body produces as a natural part of its everyday chemistry. Clinicians sometimes measure it because it is associated with cardiovascular risk and closely tied to a person's B-vitamin status.

What homocysteine is

Amino acids are the building blocks the body uses to make proteins and to run countless chemical reactions. Homocysteine is one such amino acid, formed as a byproduct when the body processes another amino acid called methionine, which comes from the food we eat.

Under normal circumstances, the body converts homocysteine into other useful substances in a series of steps. Several B vitamins act as helpers in those steps, which is why homocysteine is so closely connected to a person's B-vitamin status.
