A lipid panel is one of the most ordered blood tests in the world — and for good reason. It measures the fats (lipids) circulating in your blood, which together paint a picture of your cardiovascular risk. Here's how to read each line.
This is the sum of all the cholesterol in your blood. On its own it's a blunt instrument — a "high" total can be driven by high protective HDL — so it's best interpreted alongside the breakdown below. Generally, under 200 mg/dL is considered desirable.
Low-density lipoprotein carries cholesterol into artery walls, where it can build up as plaque. It's the primary target of cholesterol-lowering efforts. Optimal is typically under 100 mg/dL, and lower still if you already have heart disease or diabetes.
High-density lipoprotein ferries cholesterol away from arteries and back to the liver. Higher is protective: above 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women is the usual floor, with 60+ considered actively protective.
These are the storage form of fat. Elevated triglycerides (over 150 mg/dL) are linked to insulin resistance, excess refined carbohydrate intake, and alcohol. They often move together with low HDL.
A standard panel can look "normal" while risk is still elevated. Advanced markers like ApoB and Lipoprotein(a) measure the actual number and type of harmful particles and can reclassify your risk — especially useful if heart disease runs in your family.
